seems like I check in about every 6 months.

It was great while it lasted

but all our jamband crew in Vancouver (BC) seems to communicate on FB only now.

Any thoughts?? (I won't hold my breath, that's for sure)

slightly sad, Brendan in Vancouver (BC)

Legalize Hemp and Cannabis in California

Hi Family,

"And if my words did glow, with the gold of sunshine. And if my tunes were played on the harp unstrung..." Please help these words to ripple... ripple becomes a wave... wave becomes a tsunami... pretty soon love and compassion are the law of the land and we can dance in peace and unity!

Right now there are two competing signature drives to put Cannabis legalization initiatives on the ballot in California in November 2010.

One is found at www.taxcannabis2010.org

The other is found at www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org

Please look carefully at the text of both laws (the text of each is finalized) and make up your own mind which one you support.

I am supporting www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org because our law will protect Cannabis users from discrimination in

healthcare, employment, and housing. It is a full legalization measure for industrial hemp and recreational cannabis which will restore full human rights to Hemp farmers and Cannabis users all across California. Of course supplying Cannabis to children will remain illegal just as it is today. Driving vehicles under the influence will remain illegal just as it is today. Cannabis users will still be fired from their jobs if they show up to work impaired.

There are two parts to our plan. The first part is to publicly post and personally distribute our "Freedom Lover's Call to Arms" in order to recruit volunteers. This document is available here-

www.imgur.com/dbU83

The second part of our plan is to ask everyone who volunteers to make a pledge for how many signatures they can collect in

the next 30 days or so. 15-30 signatures is a good number. If enough volunteers show this level of commitment we can succeed. You can probably get that number from your family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors without having to solicit in public too much. This is an "out of the closet" movement. We will have to proudly advocate human rights for responsible, honest, hard-working Cannabis smokers in order to convince legitimate people to support us. I can supply stickers equivalent to each persons pledge number. These stickers can be used to generate interest and be given to voters who sign the petition. Here is the sticker design-

www.imgur.com/2cjvb

Feel free to distribute and use these images. Just don't copyright them.

We have 145 days in order to get the number of signatures that we need. Our petition is hot off the press on 9/11 and we

have started collecting the first signatures yesterday 9/12.

We are polling 56% public support for Cannabis legalization in California which menas that this is an initiative which is not doomed. Its time has finally arrived; we are at the tipping point right now. Now is the time to do this and to do it right. We may only get one chance. If a law which is not exactly what we want is implemented then we may lose our critical mass and our ability to set it right.

I believe that less adults will smoke cannabis after it is legal. This is the case in the Netherlands where it has been

available over-the-counter for 30 years yet only half as many citizens (percentage-wise) smoke as do citizens here. My economics professor has taught for years that prohibition has not succeeded in decreasing usage by increasing penalties. Instead it has destroyed lives and families without substantial benefit to society. After legalization hard-drug usage will decrease due to a "separation of the markets," a decline in the price of Cannabis relative to hard-drugs, and the restoration of honesty and common sense in drug education. Violence, thievery, and the incarceration of honest people will decrease as well. I also believe that a well regulated market will decrease the availability and appeal of cannabis to children. In fact teenage Cannabis use in California has fallen steadily since the passage of Proposition 215. Furthermore the adults who smoke Cannabis after legalization will be better able appreciate the majesty of nature in peace and unity without learning to fear and disrespect authority figures. This will be better for their spirits and better for society. Finally the human rights of legitimate medical Cannabis patients will be better protected than they are today. Legalizing Cannabis will create a safer, healthier, and more humane California for us all to live in.

If you want to help us in any way please contact the CCI campaign at www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org or write me at
deep_space_underground@yahoo.com I give you my encouragement to modify this message if necessary and distribute it to anyone who might help on any forum or by any mechanism.

Love,
-Fully Committed

FREE FESTEVAL- Rythms On The Rio - August 22-23

I wanted to let you know about a free festival we are putting on in South Fork CO, on August 22nd and 23rd 2009.

The festival is called Rhythms On The Rio (www.rhythmsontherio.com).

It will be a free 2 day festival with on-site and local camping. It will be a pass the hat donation based benefit for the Rio Grande Headwaters Land Trust, and the High Valley Community Center for kids, and is being put on by The South Fork Music Association, a non-profit volunteer 501-3C Group.

Headling acts will include the Nershi-Law Trio (formerly Honkeytonk Homeslice) and friends, Great American Taxi, and others. Appearing with Bill and Jill Nershi will be Scott Law, and Darol Anger (plus maybe some other unannounced guests). The Darol Anger Trio, and others, will also appear that
day. On August 23rd 2009, Great American Taxi, Susan Gibson, Pete Kartsounes, and others will also be appearing.

The festival will take place on the grassy banks of the Rio Grande river in the San Juan mountains of South Fork CO (just over Wolf Creek Pass from Pagossa Springs and west of Alamosa in the town of South Fork on highway 160), on August 22nd and 23rd 2009. It is easy to get to, and should be a kind, relaxed, real good time for everyone. Tickets are free, but must be downloaded off of the web site.

Can you please pass the word? Please check out the web site, and if you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact me at 303-898-3328 or by email (michael@delibdesigns.com or on tribe). Thanks!

How many of you arrive on Weds? What time do you usually get there and when is the latest you can arrive on Weds? I've been wanting to do that for years but never had the opportunity and I'm hoping this year might be it. So any info would be awesome!

Happy Festies!!

This past weekend my boyfriend and I were in Snowmass, CO for a moe. show. It was freakin' awesome! God, I love moe. It was so beautiful in the mountains, and there were sporadic snow flurries! The show was great, and followed a Salt Lake City show on June 5, 2009, which was awesome, too. But anyway....at Snowmass, I met an original HSMF festival'er who has been attending since the VERY FIRST HSMF. It was so cool. I felt like I was meeting royalty 8-D

She saw the MMJ show!!

I can't wait....one more month....26 more days?

I'm looking forward to Umphree McGhee's, Tea Leaf Green (who has personal significance), Keller Williams, ALO, and the beautiful mountain air!

Any other O.G's?

Papa Josh - Funk 'n' Grooves - Nor'West Tour.

Hey kids !! don't miss the chance to see "Papa Josh" Suhrheinrich when he comes to a town near you.

We are happy that PJ (originally from America) has been part of the British Columbia jam scene for some years now and are hoping that our friends in the north-west will come out to support him for this first run of shows in the USA.

Josh studied under Fareed Haque at the University of Chicago. That's right !!

I think, that most of the club shows are just a $5 cover charge, so if you love dancing and good community vibes ........... then get on the bus for Papa Josh !!!

"Fareed Haque prodigy Josh Suhrheinrich (Global Funk Council, Blusirkut) is leading the live music scene in the battle against the DJ. In a world where clubs hire more Djs than live acts, Papa Josh is taking solo performance to the next level, producing a live band on-stage before the crowd's eyes. Blending his musical talents and creative personality with his desire to make people dance, Josh plays driving drum 'n bass beats, funky guitar riffs, swanky jazz melodies and whatever else sets the dance floor on fire. Then, his powerful voice and soulful lyrics capture the crowd and take them on improvised musical journeys bouncing back and forth from tune to tune, mixing in funkified disco/Jazz/electronic/R&B/
Hiphop/Reggae, whatever inspires him in the moment. Audiences, DJ's and musicians alike are awed by his mad abilities to create live music that keeps people dancing all night long.

Don't miss his US debut with 5 west coast dates starting out in the beutiful Sierra mountains".

Hey all!

Just got this year's tickets, woooh! Year number 5 baby!

Anyways, I have the directions to get there, but I liked the way that I drove last year. We had to take an alternate route because of all the fires. Did anyone else go through Truckee like I had to? And do you have the directions? Cuz I don't. I'm debating on if I want to take that way again.
String Cheese Summer Sessions 1999 anyone?

String Cheese Summer Sessions 1999 anyone?
While looking thru LMA I noticed that it was lacking on the Cheese from the 1999 Summer Sessions tour.
If you were at any of these shows you know how special it was with sets by SCI, moe, Galactic, Govt Mule, Keller and anchored by Phil Lesh and various friends from the opening acts. They were all very good shows with lots of guesting between bands. That said, I had all the Cheese sets from that tour that I received in a dat tree and just gathering dust, so I decided to fill in the missing gaps. Hope you like them.
Cheers

Some of you know JoeLocalGuy (Marty) who cooks the BBQ for the meat-up i found a chef's togue and hat, and thought it would be a cool gift to have it dyed and then presented to him at the fest during the meat-up. It is white and 100% cotton so it can't be that hard. Something simple.(I don't want to freak him out, he is cool old guy who is not a hippie by any streatch of the imagination) Something inexpensive. get the crew to chip in for it.

So if anyone is interested or knows someone that might be let me know.

LANGERADO 2009 CANCELLED

Today, the 2009 Langerado Music Festival is cancelled due to sluggish ticket sales. The 7th annual event was slated to happen March 6-8 at their new home in downtown Miami's Bicentennial Park.

Langerado's independent local promoters, faced with a very tough decision in a dismal economy, cancelled the 2009 event only after every possible option was exhausted.

As Langerado Co-Promoter Ethan Schwartz explains, "Langerado has always put the fan experience first. Unfortunately, during these difficult economic times, and facing a first year in a new venue, it's become apparent that we cannot execute a production that lives up to the high standards of our past events. Putting Langerado on hold was the toughest decision we have ever had to make. We are very grateful for the support of the greater-Miami community and the music community during this difficult time."

All tickets purchased will be refunded. Please look for ticket refunds to be processed in the next 5-7 business days. Each order will be refunded to the credit card in full, minus the included order processing fees. Shipping fees will also be credited for those orders that did not select the free shipping promotion. Visit www.musictoday.com for more information.

One of my many favorite bands, Perpetual Groove, are playing In San Francisco on 1-22-09 at The Independent, in what seems to be their yearly migration out west. I am taking Friday off just in case I have an extra special time, heh.

I saw this band for the first time at High Sierra 2005. They closed the set at the Vaudeville tent with "All Night Long" by Lionel Richie, the tent exploded. Maybe they will make another appearance at High Sierra in 09?

Holiday Jam with BTS, Delta Nove and more!

Get in the holiday spirit as Hoodathunk Entertainment presents the 4th anual Holiday Jam taking place Wednesday Dec. 17 at the Blue Cafe in downtown Long Beach, CA. A complete evening of festive decor, fun music, and very merry fans.

Headlining the night will be the new-grass rootsicana sound of S. Lake Tahoe's Blue Turtle Seduction who recently held their own festival in California, "Las Tortugas" featuring other acts such as Melvin Seals with JGB, ALO, Tea Leaf Green, and Delta Nove to name a few.

Getting things warmed up will be a special drumming performance by Long Beach's own Delta Nove, guaranteed to get your ass shaking and make you lose a couple of those extra pounds put on this time of year.

Also performing is the always all-around fun time of Mojow & the Vibration Army featuring John Whoolilurie along with his wife Moriah. If you have ever attended a festival in the west you probably have seen John and his red Radio Flyer wagon with looping pedals attached to his waist, a saxophone strapped around his neck, and a microphone in hand, along with Moriah and her platform shoes and funky dance moves parading around the grounds.

Opening the show will be Delta Nove's drummer Dominic Feedam on guitar performing his solo looping side project.

Music starts at 8pm, so please plan to arrive early! Festive attire is encourage and admission to this event is only $10. For more info on this show and other Hoodathunk events please visit www.myspace.com/hoodathunkentertainment .

And the BEST part is that this is also my Bee Day Party! Whooo Freakin' Hoooo Yeah!!!

Jambands.com poll, next up SOE!

My band, Seconds on End, has once again been nominated for the Jambands250 "New Groove", which is a simple internet poll that lasts for a month. Our friends in Five Eyed Hand recently won this contest during the last round and we are soo excited for them. If we win this current poll we will get a featured article on the site , which would be huge for us. We need a lot of repeat votes to win this. And hopefully we can win with some help from our friends in the High Sierra Community

Voting is easy, just visit

http://www.jambands.com/Jambands250/

Click on "Seconds on End" and "submit" at the bottom.

You can vote every two hours, and this poll is going to last for a
month, so its the repeat votes that win. If you really want to help,
then set your Outlook Alerts to remind you to vote every two
hours.

Vote vote Vote!

Also I wanted to point you to some free shows for you to download enjoy up on Archive.org. Spread the love!!!

Come on down to the clubhouse Friday, Sep 12th for 2 sets of California Rock with Seconds on End! Its been a while since SOE performed at the Yankee, so please do expect a whole different experience with Seconds on End. This band has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years, and promises to put on a fantastic show! We're celebrating Geraldine's birthday this night, so we hope you can be there to wish her a happy birthday.

Seconds on End
@ The Connecticut Yankee
Friday, 9/12, 10pm
100 Connecticut Street
San Francisco
$5 cover

Our show with Izabella on 9/6 at 12 Galaxies was cancelled due to the unfortunate closure of 12 Galaxies. We appreciate all that Robert has done for the community, and we are so sorry to see that venue close. The members of SOE will all be at the Yankee on 9/6 for Izabella's rescheduled show. Hope you'll come out to support that one as well.

2008 Lost and Found

many were lost, but the main thing i am concerned about is a
blue trader joe's surfboard bag with a handmade aqua blue/ white netting outfit in it.
my delivery to a friend was unsucessful and i picked it up monday sometime,
then proceeded to set it down and leave it (somwhere around the showers near vaudeville i think. . . )
i would REALLY appreciate finding it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so i can get it to it's rightful owner, it really isn't replaceable.

another minor loss was a smaller kleen kanteen (i can get a new one, but love the stickers!)
i think it has a keep tahoe blue & a keep tahoe seductive, heart in oregon, and maybe Zero????

if you didn't get enough funk at HSMF, you weren't trying.
besides Dumpstaphunk and the Lee Boys, i really liked Trombone Shorty.
well he played in SF 2 nights at the Indy as an opener for Lettuce,
then came down to santa cruz for his own sold out show on a monday night in da cruz.
around 3.5 hrs of funky goodness.
high on the funk, low on the hip hop.

HSMF newbies in '08

Alright, so just how many newbies were there this year?!?!

All this time I thought I was the only one still missing out on all the fun, but within minutes of getting there on Wednesday night I learned that Sidd and Brian Rogers were newbies too! Next thing I k ow I'm running into newbies left and right! I was stoked on the camaraderie! I know that Callie Mohler brought Lee to his first this year, obviously Chris 2Me and Jessica hadn't been, BeeSea too? I was walking from the hillside back into things when somebody shouted "420 roadblock"....turns out the two people smoking out passers-by were there for the first time too!

I hope I can speak for all the great folks who experienced their first HSMF this year when I say that I will NEVER miss is again.

For the record, I cant thank you all enough for popping my high sierra cherry in the most amazing ways I could have ever imagined.

And let the dirty jokes fly!!

Sleep Deprivation Tank

The members of Seconds on End and Mike Toth hosted the Sleep Dep Tank in the Big Meadow this year. For those who haven't experienced it, the Sleep Deprivation Tank is a churn of musicians that occurs somewhere in the campground at High Sierra Music Festival. Its basically a very-respectful rogue stage that doesn't get shut down because we keep volume levels in an appropriate range. Music typically starts in the set-breaks of evening Vaudeville and Big Meadow shows, and after 1:30am, SDT runs all night until first light. This year we had a lot of music by Seconds on End, and every member of Five Eyed Hand participated in the late night SDT jams. Many many other musicians sat-in throughout the weekend, making this one of the most expansive collaborative jams of the festival.

Recordings of this year (2008) and last year (2007) are available on LMA

"Friends of Fair" Issue, overzealous patrons, PLEASE READ

My friend who I have known for many years had an issue at High Sierra this year, and this is his story.

Heres the story from my friend.

PLEASE be mindful as to not over hype or spread any rumors about this out there. Its YOUR responsiblity to be RESPONSIBLE about how to convey the story. PLEASE dont be OVERZEALOUS.

So I was at a late night in the Jam house, just dancing and having a good
time, when I noticed someone acting strange around me. This individual stood
next to me, but didn't watch the show...just stared at me. At first I didn't
think anything of it, but then I noticed other people start to act strangely
around me as well...to the point where people would walk past me saying
things like, "F this guy, lets just go", or brushing past me telling me to
leave and I'm not welcome. Well, I'm very observant and mindful of my
surroundings, so I noticed the weirdness so I asked the individual who was
standing next to me...who seemed to be the first person to act weird around
me, what was up. I asked him why he was acting unusual around me and I
didn't really get a response, so I asked this person if he was a festival
staff member. The guy said, no, that he was a "friend of the festival". So I
tell him that I noticed that he and others were treating me very strangely,
so the guys says, "Maybe you should leave then." Ummm, ok...so I find that
odd, and kind of just go back to enjoying the show. Well, the situation
started to escalate more, to the point where there was about a five foot
radius around me, where no one would stand...and more people started to kind
of point me out, and then walk away. So again, being the observant person I
am, I started to become aware that for some reason, this "friend of the
fest" had deemed me not welcome at the show and had possibly been letting
other people know. So I decided since I wasn't welcome there, I should
leave. SO I grabbed my stuff and left....that's when I noticed that I was
actually followed out of the show and the situation got worse. I notified
staff that I didn't feel safe, and nipped the whole situation in the bud
right there. I made it back to my tent, luckily un-safe from harm...and kind
of let the situation die...just wanting to forget about it. Well, a couple
days after I was back, I was on the high sierra message board just checking
out peoples afterthoughts, reviews, etc. and I noticed this thread on the
message board.

www.highsierramusic.com/commun...pic.php

And most significantly, THIS message within that thread -

"as a Friend of the Fair, I can tell you that the police presence was
minimal, and even the undercover got followed and observed. Had to leave
early Sunday night, so I don't know how that went, but we Friends are more
witnesses than controllers, and most of our job is to tell folks helpful
information. We did that sort of thing mostly, and followed the police when
they came in a few times.
It was a good fest, both cop-wise and love-wise, and if there were any
arrests, I didn't hear about them in any way I could confirm."

Words like, "friend of the festival", and "most of our job is to tell folks
HELPFUL information" really stuck out...and Well, it doesn't take a genius
to figure out what they meant by that.

So once I read this message, I was both relieved that what had happened
wasn't just in my head...and that this supposed, "friend of the festival"
had not only started to observe me, but also told others to be careful
around me. But with that relief also came anger and disbelief that such a
thing would ever happen at High Sierra. Mind you, I've attended 5 or 6 High
Sierra fests since 2001, so I'm nothing new to the fest. Even though I
hadn't attended in the past two years prior, I still couldn't believe that
the level of paranoia would escalate to the point where they would install a
vigilante system, of sorts, to try to maintain a level of safety. I
understand that people are very protective of the fest, but I found this
tactic to be a very, very, very dangerous way of going about that. Its one
thing to observe and watch someone, but to go as far as telling other
festival goers of your suspicions, with no proof whatsoever...is a terrible
idea, in any capacity. You have no idea what state of mind those people are in when you tell them things like that, how protective they are of their
surroundings, and how they might decide to handle the situation themselves. You also can't control how that message might get passed along, and what
started as, "be careful around this person", might turn into as it does get
passed along.

I felt like I was put in a more dangerous situation then any undercover or
cop could ever put me in. The sad thing is, I did nothing to deserve this
treatment. It would have been one thing if I had been walking around, asking suspicious questions or doing weird things....but 100% totally honest, I did
nothing but go into the show and start dancing and watching. I was actually only in the show for literally 20-25 minutes. Honestly, if I had felt like I
did something to deserve this, I don't think I'd even care to bring this
story up. Trust me, I struggled within myself on whether or not to tell
others, but after I thought about it...I thought maybe in telling this
story, I might save others from having to go thru this same awful
experience.

I don't know if this "friends of the fest" thing came down from the High
Sierra staff....or if this was just some people who decided to take it upon
themselves, but from that post on the High Sierra Message Board, it soundslike it was pretty well organized, so that really disturbed me...either
way...this needed to be pointed out so those parties involved know that they CAN and DID make a mistake. Luckily, nothing happened this time....but who knows what might happen next time, and that's why I ultimately decided to share this story. I'm not looking for any retribution at all, and I'd rather
just stay anonymous, because it really doesn't matter to whom or where this happened at the fest, just the fact that it DID happen, I think is the
important thing....and it needed to be pointed out.

And to add one more thing, if people feel the need to be protective of High
Sierra, maybe High Sierra should deploy their, "friends of the fest" out to
the campgrounds to keep an eye on the safety of people's belongings, because while these "friends of the fest" were busy eyeing people who may or may not have been cops at the shows, it sounds like thefts were happening left and
right in the camps. Its ironic too that everyone wants to have this utopian
society, free of cops and oppression....but I felt more oppressed by these
supposed do-gooders then I had the entire weekend, at any point. Anyways, not here to preach...just want to say, be careful in your actions and your
intentions...which might seem good at the time, but might not be a good idea overall.

...because I passed a shit ton of them out, and by Sunday I was seeing them on people that I didn't remember giving them to. That means I was either on a different planet when I gave it to you and just don't remember it, OR a close friend of mine gave it to you. Awesome either way.

Figured it'd be nice to see who got 'em!

Hoedown n Nevda City, Ca. with Gret American Taxi

Having post High Sierra decompression issues?? Need another FESTTTIIIIVAAAAALLLLL fix? Did you miss Vince this year? For the first time ever, Vinces band Great American taxi will be playing here in Nevada County! 2 shows in one night!!! Grass Valley street faire at 6pm they will perform down on east Man st. close to Foggy Mtn Music, and then we will re-group at Coopers in Nevada City 3 miles away for a club rock out!!! GAT is psychedelic honkey tonkin' good time Americana with a polyethnic twist not unlike Leftover Salmon, the leader of GAT's original band. Plenty of dancin' and experimentation with music, ranging from hilarious great times to a songwriter extrordinare passion that only Vince Herman holds in his mind. His magic is known to be both melodically sentimental and meaningful, to crazy shenanigans and whiskey drenched fun. One of a kind sounds with a familiar rootsy edge from Colorado. What a treat!!!

I like heavy metal, so I was very curious. I thought it was pretty cheesy that he didn't have a backing band, but he more than made up for it with all the extra notes. It was excessive, way over the top, and really fun. I think there's lots of people at HSMF that would love at least a set or two of some harder edged music - lotsa people were into it. I'd say bring him back next year ONLY if he has a band, and get him to jam a song or two with one of the funk or jambands.

2008 High Sierra Music Festival Vendors
Yeah, I know you go for the music... but just as you might go for Gov't Mule and you discover Bassnector there are lots of extra bonuses at High Sierra. You might go for The Slip and discover a vendor selling hula hoops and reconnect with your childhood.
Vendors are a big part of festivals, and festivals are a big part of keeping their business going. It's an honor to be accepted... it's still work, but the event, the music, and the people are the extra bonuses.
Once you get your ticket, start saving those pennies... you might just find that perfect something at the art and craft fair or the food court or....

one of my favorite things about High Sierra is
the mingling of artists.

I hear Will Bernard was out in full force this year.
I also heard Eric McFadden and James Whiton sat
in with Five Eyed Hand! WoW!

What other sit ins happened this year??

Fresh off their first High Sierra throw down, Izabella will be passing through Portland on their way to the Remember Jerry Festival in Northern Idaho. This Wednesday, July 9th, will be our third trip to beautiful Portland and these guys are sure to rock the house. Portland has been very good to us and the band is feeling it right now. Izabella always starts at 9:30pm sharp on the weeknights at the Goodfoot so you're able to get your fill before heading to bed. See you there

Wednesday, July 9th
The Goodfoot Pub in Portland, OR
2 full sets of Izabella @ 9:30pm SHARP!

Not that we doubted it..but now..it's official

From the Plumas County News:

http://www.plumasnews.com/news_story.edi?sid=6439

High Sierra Music Festival and other activities will take place this weekend
7/1/08
Because of the fires in the north state area, many of our readers have inquired if the High Sierra Music Festival in Quincy as well as other 4th of July activities in Chester, Indian Valley, Graeagle/Blairsden, Quincy and surrounding communities will take place as scheduled.

The answer is yes, in fact, clearing skies are in the forecast.

The fires in the Canyon Complex are holding steady and there has been no damage to structures. Crews continue to aggressively fight the fires.

State Route 70 is under traffic control, using multiple pilot cars. The control is in place near Belden, in Plumas County and Big Bend Road, in Butte County. This is a 20 mile control. Motorists should expect delays. This highway may close at any time if conditions change.

State Route 32 is closed from the Junction of SR 36 in Tehama County to Butte Meadows in Butte County, due to wildfire. There is no estimated time to reopen.

State Route 36 west is currently open with no restrictions.

All other highways are open at this time.

Please check road conditions before you travel at: Caltrans

It sounds like there are a lot of fires up in that area. We are keeping an eye on them, as they would affect our route. Are all of the highways in to Quincy still open? Are the fires staying away so the Festival will go on?

Is anyone on this board in Quincy right now? How smoky is it?

Does anyone have any alternate routes actually planned out for their drive? Want to share? I usually go the normal route listed in the reg packet, but if it's going to be smoky because of the fire, I would like to know of some other ways to get there. I am coming from SF Bay area.

It seems that all my friends are are going to the Festival on Wednesday and I am looking to go up to there on Thursday (time is flexible). I live in San Francisco and will share gas costs, etc. I won't have a lot of stuff and can even have friends bring up some things if space is an issue. The only thing I request is an air conditioned vehicle (I went last year in one that wasn't and it was pretty brutal). It looks like I can get a ride back to SF but if you want a share (on Sunday) I am flexible too. Thanks.

Please, please be careful everyone. This is really sad and scary stuff. Those of you attending the fest, or any other fest in areas with really bad air quality need to know this info going into it. I'm in Santa Cruz and the air is really nasty as it is in much of the state right now. I think it's already been said on another thread that dust masks will not prevent smoke exposure but respirators will. I'm not telling anyone to do anything other than to be careful, especially those with small ones.

I love my community and want everyone to be healthy and safe.

http://www.plumasnews.com/news_story.edi?sid=6435

06/26/08
Plumas County Public Health Agency (PCPHA) and Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District (NSAQMD) have been monitoring smoke in the county, and issued a health warning beginning earlier this week. Public Health Officials continue to recommend that residents stay indoors and restrict outdoor activities until the present conditions improve. In general, if you smell smoke, or see smoke around you, you should take precautions outlined in this advisory.

Air Quality Index levels around Plumas County have been in the unhealthy to very unhealthy ranges over the last 48 hours. Air pollution levels from the fires can change radically within hours, depending on fire and weather conditions. Public Health officials in particular urge residents who have respiratory or heart conditions to take precautions whenever smoke is present, though all residents should use common sense.
What to do if there is smoke present:
Stay inside with windows and doors shut.
Use the recycle or re-circulate mode on the air conditioner in your home or car.
Avoid cooking and vacuuming, which can increase pollutants indoors.
 Avoid physical exertion.
Asthmatics should follow their asthma management plan.
Keep at least a five-day supply of medication on hand.
Contact your doctor if you have symptoms such as chest pain, chest tightness, shortness of breath, or severe fatigue. This is important for not only for people with chronic lung or heart disease, but also for individuals who have not been previously diagnosed with such illnesses. Smoke can unmask or produce symptoms of such diseases.
Keep airways moist by drinking lots of water. Breathing through a warm, wet washcloth can also help relieve dryness.
A fitted respirator (NIOSH certified N95 or P100) can be used to reduce smoke exposure unless it interferes with breathing. Common dust masks are generally ineffective with smoke.

Information on the Use of Masks and Respirators for Reducing Exposure to Smoke:
Common dust and surgical masks provide little or no protection from the health effects of smoke. In fact, these masks may actually be harmful, giving the wearers a false sense of protection. These are different than respirators, which filter out small particles. Respirators should only be used after first taking other actions to reduce exposure to smoke, like staying indoors and reducing activity. There are, however, some situations in which respirator use can be beneficial, with the proper type of mask and correct fit. For outdoor workers, or others who will be outside regardless of the smoke, properly fitted respirators can afford some protection.

N95 and P100 respirators can be beneficial in some circumstances. These types of masks are actually respirators in which the entire facepiece is made of filter material.
N95 and P100 respirators can be purchased at most hardware stores and filter out 95% and 99.97% of very small particles and must be certified by the National Institute for Occupational Safety (NIOSH) with the words NIOSH and N95 or P100) appearing on the facepiece. They do not protect against gases or vapors and do not provide oxygen.
A respirator must have a tight seal on the face, including over the nose and under the chin. Facial hair will cause the respirator to leak, so you should be clean shaven. They do not come in sizes that fit children and NIOSH does not certify any respirators for children.
It takes more effort to breathe through a respirator, increasing the risk of heat stress. If you are working outside while wearing a respirator, take frequent breaks in clean indoor air. If you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or nauseous or become disoriented, go to a clean area, remove your respirator, and get medical attention.
Store your respirator in a clean dry place and replace if it becomes hard to breather through it or if the inside becomes dirty. If possible, use a fresh respirator everyday.
